Survey setout geometry

Grade Stake Elevation Calculator

Calculate a target stake elevation from a known elevation, horizontal distance and signed grade. The result keeps the benchmark datum and grade assumption explicit.

Stake elevation inputs

Positive raises elevation; negative lowers it.
Elevation change = distance × grade ÷ 100. Use the same distance/elevation unit system.
Enter a benchmark elevation, distance and grade.

How the grade stake calculation works

A target elevation is obtained by applying the vertical change associated with the entered grade to a known reference. This is useful for grading, slab preparation, drainage layout and other setting-out tasks where a design slope is already known.

Target elevation = reference elevation + (distance × grade ÷ 100)

Worked example

A reference elevation of 100.000 m located 25 m from the target at +2.5% gives a rise of 0.625 m, producing a target elevation of 100.625 m.

Important field limitation

This calculator does not establish a benchmark, perform a survey adjustment or verify site control. Confirm the project datum, benchmark identity and grade direction before transferring a calculated value to site.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is stake elevation calculated from grade?

Multiply horizontal distance by grade as a decimal and add the resulting vertical change to the reference elevation.

Can grade be negative?

Yes. A negative grade represents a fall in the stated direction.

Does this replace a level or total-station check?

No. It provides arithmetic support for layout and should be field-verified.
