Utility crossing geometry

Pipe Crossing Elevation Checker

Compare service center elevations and estimate the geometric vertical separation between pipe envelopes. Diameter, clearance and assumptions remain visible.

Crossing inputs

Approximate surface clearance = centerline separation − half of each entered outside diameter.
Enter both service elevations and dimensions.

Crossing elevation methodology

The first check is the vertical distance between service centerlines. For round pipe envelopes, half of each outside diameter can be subtracted from that separation to estimate surface-to-surface clearance.

Clearance ≈ |e₁ − e₂| − (D₁ + D₂) ÷ 2

Worked example

With centerlines 0.65 m apart, a 160 mm diameter service and a 110 mm diameter service give an approximate geometric clearance of 0.515 m.

Why this is only a screening check

Insulation, protection, bedding, carrier systems, actual pipe shape, tolerances and project requirements can materially change the usable separation. Use the calculated value as a geometric check, not an approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this check pipe clearance?

It provides an approximate geometric clearance from entered center elevations and outside diameters.

Can the clearance be negative?

Yes. A negative result means the simplified circular envelopes overlap.

Does this approve a utility crossing?

No. Design and project requirements must still be checked.
