Slope geometry

Distance Along Slope Calculator

Find the actual sloped distance between two points from horizontal run and vertical difference. Grade and angle are shown as supporting measurements.

Slope inputs

Enter horizontal and vertical dimensions.

Why slope distance is different

Horizontal run is the plan projection. The physical distance along the slope is the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the run and vertical change.

Sloped distance = √(horizontal² + vertical²)

Example

For 12 m horizontal distance and 1.5 m rise, the true sloped distance is approximately 12.093 m.

Common use

The result can support sloped surface measurement, ramp geometry, site access measurements and other two-dimensional slope calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is slope distance longer than horizontal distance?

Yes, except when vertical difference is zero.

How is slope distance calculated?

Use the Pythagorean relationship between horizontal and vertical components.

Can this calculate a three-dimensional route?

No. It is a two-dimensional slope model.
