Physical surface geometry

Sloped Surface Area Calculator

Calculate the actual area of a sloped surface from its width, horizontal projection and rise. An optional allowance is shown separately for procurement planning.

Surface dimensions

Enter width, run and rise.

How physical sloped area is calculated

The horizontal projection is the plan dimension. The actual surface is longer because of the rise. Once that sloped length is known, multiply by the surface width.

Sloped length = √(run² + rise²)
Area = width × sloped length

Example

An 8 m wide plane with 20 m horizontal run and 3 m rise has a sloped length of about 20.224 m and an area of about 161.79 m².

Allowance

The planning allowance is intentionally separate from geometry. It can represent a project-specific procurement margin but should not be treated as a universal waste factor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is sloped area larger than plan area?

The physical slope length is longer than its horizontal projection.

Can this calculate roof area?

Yes for a simple planar roof slope with consistent dimensions.

Is the allowance a universal waste rate?

No. It is entirely user-defined.
