Roof Underlayment Roll Calculator
Estimate underlayment roll requirements from actual roof area, roll dimensions, side and end overlap assumptions, and cutting waste.

How underlayment roll quantities are estimated
Underlayment overlaps mean the full nominal roll area is not equivalent to waterproofed roof area. This estimate reduces effective width and length before calculating the practical material requirement.
Effective length = roll length − end overlap
Planning area = roof area adjusted for overlap and waste
Rolls = ceiling(planning area ÷ nominal roll area)
Why nominal roll area can mislead
A 25 m² roll does not necessarily provide 25 m² of net roof coverage. Overlaps, cuts and detail areas consume part of the material.
Worked example
For 180 m² of roof using 1 × 25 m rolls, the nominal roll area is 25 m². After overlap and project allowances, the required planning area increases before the result is rounded to complete rolls.
Detailing is separate
Valleys, penetrations, eaves and abutments often require additional detailing. Those should be checked against the roof drawing rather than assumed to disappear inside the generic allowance.
Limitations
This is a roll-planning estimate. It does not simulate exact strip nesting, roof planes or manufacturer-specific detail geometry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does overlap increase roll count?
Yes.
Should overlap be chosen from the calculator?
No. Use the specified roofing system requirement.
Does roll width matter?
Yes.
Are valleys included?
Only indirectly through your allowance.
