Roof measurement

Roof Waterproofing Area Calculator

Calculate the actual roof surface that must be waterproofed instead of using flat plan area alone. Choose a pitch-based or rise-and-run method and keep detailing allowance separate.

Roof geometry

For a simple gable roof, the roof width input should represent the full horizontal plan width. The calculator converts that width into sloped surface area using the selected slope method.
Enter roof plan dimensions and slope.

Why flat roof plan area can understate waterproofing surface

A sloped roof has a longer physical surface than its horizontal projection. Waterproofing material must follow the actual surface, so pitch should be included when estimating sloped roof coverage.

Surface factor from angle = 1 ÷ cos(angle)
Surface area = plan area × surface factor

Rise and run method

When pitch angle is unavailable, the slope length can be found from rise and horizontal run. The relevant surface factor for that slope direction is derived from the right triangle.

Worked example

A 12 × 8 m roof has a flat plan area of 96 m². At a 20° roof pitch, the sloped area is greater than 96 m². Adding a 7% detailing allowance then creates a procurement planning area above the geometric surface.

What is not included automatically

Flashings, parapets, penetrations, upstands, drains, laps and detail strips are project-specific. The optional percentage is therefore kept visible as a planning assumption rather than being hidden in the geometry.

Important limitations

This calculator estimates roof surface area. It does not determine membrane design, drainage, structural roof geometry, flashing details or waterproofing system selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does roof pitch increase area?

Yes.

Can I use rise and run instead of an angle?

Yes.

Are flashings included?

No.

Can I estimate material cost?

Yes, using your own $/m² assumption.
