Waterproofing preparation

Waterproofing Primer Calculator

Estimate primer quantity beneath a waterproofing system from substrate area, product coverage, number of coats and application allowance. Keep the product-specific basis visible for procurement.

Primer inputs

Coverage depends on substrate porosity and the selected waterproofing system. Use the manufacturer's actual primer coverage where available.
Enter primer area and coverage.

How waterproofing primer quantity is calculated

The calculation is similar to other coating systems, but the controlling coverage should come from the primer specified for the membrane or waterproofing system.

Theoretical primer = area × coats ÷ coverage
Planning primer = theoretical primer × (1 + allowance)

Why substrate condition matters

Concrete, screed, masonry and existing coatings can have very different absorption characteristics. Dust, surface texture and preparation quality can also affect practical primer demand.

Worked example

For 150 m² at 8 m²/L and one coat, theoretical primer demand is 18.75 L. With a 10% allowance, planning quantity becomes 20.63 L, requiring three 10 L containers.

System compatibility

A quantity calculation cannot establish whether a primer is compatible with a membrane. That selection should follow the waterproofing manufacturer's system documentation and substrate instructions.
