Open steel section mass

Steel Channel Weight Calculator

Estimate channel-section weight per metre and total mass from depth, flange width, web thickness, flange thickness and length. The section-area model is visible so you can audit every assumption.

The model assumes uniform rectangular web and flanges. Rolled-section fillets, taper and tolerances are not modeled.

Channel section weight formula

Area = web area + two flange areas
Area = h × tw + 2 × (b − tw) × tf
Mass / metre = area × density

The subtraction of web thickness from flange width avoids double-counting the web area where the simplified channel is treated as a union of three rectangles.

Worked example

For h = 200 mm, b = 75 mm, tw = 8 mm and tf = 11 mm, the simplified cross-sectional area is 2,934 mm². At 7,850 kg/m³, the theoretical mass is about 23.03 kg/m.

Why section tables are still useful

Commercial rolled channels may have radiused corners, tapered geometry and standardized dimensions. A published section mass is therefore usually preferable when a specific rolled profile has already been identified.

Engineering boundary

This calculates mass only. It does not establish bending strength, shear capacity, buckling resistance, connection design or section compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this calculate C-channel weight?

Yes, for a section that can reasonably be represented by the entered rectangular dimensions.

Can I use stainless steel?

Yes, by changing density.

Why can the answer differ from a steel manual?

Real rolled profiles are not exact sharp-corner rectangles.
