Angle weight formula

For a simple L-section, the two rectangular legs overlap at the corner. The overlap is therefore subtracted once.

Area = (A × t) + (B × t) − t²
Mass / metre = area × density

Worked example

A 75 × 50 × 6 mm angle has a theoretical area of 714 mm². At 7,850 kg/m³, its nominal mass is about 5.605 kg/m. A 6 m piece is therefore about 33.63 kg.

Equal versus unequal angles

Equal angles have A = B. Unequal angles have different leg dimensions. The same area relationship works for both, but the section shape and structural properties are different.

Why exact section tables can differ

Rolled steel angles are not perfect sharp-corner rectangles. Fillets, actual dimensions and product tolerances mean a published section table may not match the simple geometric estimate exactly. Use the applicable section standard or supplier table when the exact nominal section mass matters.

What this tool does not determine

The calculator gives section mass only. It does not calculate area moments of inertia, section modulus, buckling resistance, connection capacity or structural adequacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calculate unequal angle weight?

Yes. Enter different values for legs A and B.

What density is used?

The default is 7,850 kg/m³.

Does thickness affect weight?

Yes, directly through the cross-sectional area.

Why can a section table give a different mass?

Real rolled sections include fillets and manufacturing tolerances.
