HSS section mass

Steel Hollow Section Weight Calculator

Calculate theoretical rectangular or square hollow-section mass per metre from outside dimensions, wall thickness, length and density. The tool also exposes the inner dimensions and steel area used in the calculation.

Hollow section dimensions

Enter the outer dimensions and wall thickness.

Hollow section weight

—
total theoretical mass
—Inner width
—Inner height
—kg / metre
—Steel area
—
Corner radii and production tolerances are not included in this sharp-corner model.

Hollow section weight formula

Inner width = B − 2t
Inner height = H − 2t
Steel area = B×H − inner width×inner height
Mass / metre = steel area × density

Worked example

A 150 × 100 × 6 mm rectangular hollow section has simple inner dimensions of 138 × 88 mm. Its theoretical steel area is 1,656 mm², giving approximately 13.00 kg/m at 7,850 kg/m³.

Square hollow sections

For a square section, use the same value for outside width and outside height. This makes the tool suitable for simple square HSS calculations without requiring a second calculator.

Why section tables can differ

Manufactured hollow sections commonly include rounded corners and dimensional tolerances. A published section table for a specified profile should therefore be used where exact commercial mass is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calculate square HSS?

Yes. Set outside width equal to outside height.

Can I calculate stainless or aluminium HSS?

Yes, by changing density to an appropriate material value.

Does wall thickness affect weight?

Yes, strongly, because it changes the steel area.

Does this include corner radii?

No.
