Pipe section mass

Steel Pipe Weight Calculator

Calculate theoretical pipe mass per metre and total weight from outside diameter, wall thickness, length, quantity and material density. The annular-section method is transparent enough to check against a section table.

How steel pipe weight is calculated

A circular pipe is a hollow cylinder. Its steel area equals the area of the outside circle minus the area of the inside circle.

ID = OD − 2t
Steel area = π/4 × (OD² − ID²)
Mass / metre = steel area × density

Diameter values must be in metres when combined with density in kilograms per cubic metre.

Worked example

For a 114.3 mm outside diameter and 6.02 mm wall thickness, the inside diameter is approximately 102.26 mm. Using 7,850 kg/m³ gives a theoretical unit mass close to 16.0 kg/m.

Why nominal dimensions are only a starting point

Pipe standards define dimensional tolerances, grades and manufacturing requirements. A calculated nominal mass may therefore differ from the actual supplied mass. Use the applicable section table or supplier documentation when the exact commercial weight matters.

Important boundary

This is a geometric mass calculation. It does not select a pipe schedule, pressure rating, structural grade or design thickness.

Quick dimensional sanity checks

ConditionExpected effect
Increase outside diameterHigher cross-sectional steel area and weight.
Increase wall thicknessHigher mass per metre.
Increase lengthProportional increase in total mass.
Change densityDirect proportional change in mass.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pipe weight formula?

Use the annular area between the outside and inside diameters multiplied by material density.

Can I use this for stainless steel?

Yes, by entering a suitable stainless-steel density.

Does pipe length affect kg/m?

No. Length affects total mass but not theoretical mass per metre.

Can I use pipe schedule names instead of dimensions?

Not in this version. Enter the actual outside diameter and wall thickness from the applicable specification.
