Steel I-Beam Weight Calculator
Estimate I-beam or H-section mass per metre and total steel weight from the section dimensions. The simplified area method makes the calculation easy to audit without depending on a hidden section table.

I-beam weight formula
A simplified I-section consists of two flanges and the web between them.
Mass / metre = area × density
Worked example
For h = 300 mm, b = 150 mm, tw = 8 mm and tf = 12 mm, the simplified area is 5,712 mm². At 7,850 kg/m³, the theoretical mass is about 44.84 kg/m.
Why rolled-section tables can differ
Commercial I-beams and H-sections include geometry that is not reproduced by a sharp-corner rectangle model. Use the applicable manufacturer's or standard section table when an identified commercial profile is being procured.
Engineering boundary
Mass is not the same thing as capacity. Beam design also depends on section properties, material grade, loading, lateral restraint, buckling and connections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I calculate H-beam weight?
Yes for a section represented by the dimensions entered here.
Can I use another density?
Yes.
Does beam length change kg/m?
No. It changes total mass only.
Can this replace a structural steel table?
No. It is a dimensional estimate.
