Pipe Thread Seal Tape Calculator for Fittings

Estimate thread-seal tape consumption from fitting quantity, thread outside diameter, wraps per fitting and tape roll length. The calculation keeps the physical assumptions visible instead of hiding them behind a generic multiplier.

Thread tape inputs

The diameter is an estimating input representing the circular path of one wrap. Actual tape use depends on the thread geometry, tape width, overlap and installation method.

Thread tape calculation method

Length per wrap = π × thread diameter
Tape / fitting = length per wrap × wraps
Net tape = tape / fitting × fitting count
Planning tape = net tape × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Rolls = ceiling(planning tape ÷ roll length)

Why diameter matters

A wrap follows approximately the circumference of the thread path. Larger threaded connections therefore consume more tape per wrap when the wrap count is held constant.

Installation guidance

The calculator does not recommend a universal number of wraps. Use the manufacturer's instructions for the selected thread seal tape and fitting system.

Worked example

40 fittings, 20 mm average thread diameter and 6 wraps:

Wrap length = π × 0.02 = 0.06283 m
Tape / fitting = 0.06283 × 6 = 0.377 m
Net = 0.377 × 40 ≈ 15.08 m
With 10% allowance ≈ 16.59 m

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this specific to PTFE tape?

It is suitable as a generic thread-seal tape consumption model, but product-specific application instructions control actual use.

Can different fitting sizes be mixed?

Not accurately in one average-diameter input. For mixed sizes, calculate each group separately and add the totals.

Does tape width affect length?

It can affect overlap and number of wraps, so the user-entered wrap count should reflect the actual installation method.
