Reorder Point Formula

Daily consumption = period consumption ÷ days in period Lead-time demand = daily consumption × lead time in days Reorder point = lead-time demand + safety stock Recommended order = target stock − current stock
The reorder point tells you when to place an order. The recommended order quantity tells you how much to order to reach your selected target stock level.

Example

Consumption
100 kg per day.
Lead time
14 days.
Lead-time demand
100 × 14 = 1,400 kg.
Safety stock
20% of 1,400 kg = 280 kg.
Reorder point
1,400 + 280 = 1,680 kg.

How to use this calculator

This is an inventory-planning estimate. Actual requirements may change because of demand fluctuations, supplier delays, minimum order quantities, batch sizes and unexpected production consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a reorder point? The reorder point is the inventory level at which you should normally place a replenishment order so expected consumption during lead time is covered.

What is safety stock? Safety stock is additional inventory kept as a buffer against unexpected demand or supplier delays.

How does lead time affect the reorder point? A longer lead time means more material may be consumed before the next delivery arrives, increasing the reorder point.

Can I use a fixed safety quantity? Yes. You can enter a specific quantity of safety stock instead of using a percentage or additional consumption days.

Can I calculate the recommended order quantity? Yes. The calculator uses your current stock and target stock to determine how much material would be required to restore inventory to the target level.

Does this calculate actual supplier orders? No. It provides a planning estimate. Supplier minimum order quantities, standard stock sizes and delivery schedules may require adjustments.
