Calculation details

How the calculator works

Volume = dimensions of the selected shape Weight = volume × density Total weight = weight per piece × quantity Material cost = total weight × supplier rate/kg Total purchase cost = material cost + freight + cutting/processing + other costs Effective cost/kg = total purchase cost ÷ total metal weight
For dimensions, the calculator converts the selected unit to centimetres and uses density in g/cm³. The resulting weight is converted to kilograms.

Example

Steel plate
10 pieces × 1,000 mm × 500 mm × 10 mm, density 7.85 g/cm³.
Estimated weight
Each plate weighs approximately 39.25 kg, giving approximately 392.5 kg for 10 pieces.
Material cost
At USD 2.50/kg, material cost is approximately USD 981.25 before additional purchase costs.

Purchasing considerations

Dimensional calculations estimate theoretical weight. Actual purchased weight can differ because of tolerances, coatings, fabrication, scale and supplier weighing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is metal purchase cost calculated? The calculator determines the metal weight from dimensions and density, multiplies it by quantity, then multiplies total weight by the supplier's price per kilogram.

Can I calculate the cost of metal sheets? Yes. Select rectangular plate/sheet and enter length, width, thickness, quantity and density.

Can I calculate round bar cost? Yes. Select round bar/rod and enter diameter, length, quantity, density and rate per kilogram.

Can I calculate pipe purchase cost? Yes. Enter outside diameter, wall thickness and length. The calculator determines the metal cross-sectional area and theoretical weight.

Can I enter a known weight? Yes. Switch to known-weight mode if the supplier has already provided the material weight.

Can I add freight and processing? Yes. Freight, cutting/processing and other purchase costs are included in the total purchase cost.

What currency is used by default? USD is the default currency, with additional currencies available for international purchasing.
