Stringer Material Estimate

Results will appear after calculation.

Formula

Number of risers: N = rounded whole number near Total Rise / Target Riser Actual riser: Rise = Total Rise / N Number of treads: T = N − 1 Actual tread: Run per tread = Total Run / T Stair angle: θ = atan(Total Rise / Total Run) Straight stringer length: L = √(Rise² + Run²) Step relationship: 2Riser + Tread Stringer material estimate: Required length = Straight stringer length + top allowance + bottom allowance For multiple stringers: Total material = Required length × number of stringers
This is a geometric layout calculator, not a structural or building-code approval tool. Stair design must be checked against the applicable local building regulations, structural loads, support conditions, headroom, landings, handrails, guards and required minimum/maximum dimensions.

Example

Total rise
3000 mm.
Target riser
170 mm.
Selected risers
18 risers.
Actual riser
3000 ÷ 18 = 166.67 mm.
Treads
18 − 1 = 17 treads.
Run
17 × 250 mm = 4250 mm when using a 250 mm tread.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a stair stringer? A stringer is the structural or supporting member running along the side of a staircase and supporting the treads and risers.

How is stringer length calculated? For a straight stair, the sloping length is the hypotenuse formed by the total vertical rise and horizontal run.

How many risers should a staircase have? The number depends on the floor-to-floor height and the permitted riser range under the applicable building requirements.

How is actual riser height calculated? Divide the total floor-to-floor rise by the selected whole number of risers.

How many treads are there? For a simple stair terminating at the upper floor, the tread count is commonly one less than the riser count, although landing and stair configuration can change this.

What is stair angle? It is the angle of the stair stringer relative to horizontal, calculated from total rise and total run.

Can this calculate metal stringer material? Yes. It estimates the sloping stringer length and can multiply it by the number of stringers, with optional top and bottom allowances.

Does this determine the steel section size? No. Steel channel, tube, angle or plate size must be selected from a structural design based on loads, span, supports, material properties and applicable standards.

Can this be used for fabrication? It is suitable as a preliminary dimensional layout. Fabrication drawings should include the actual tread thickness, connection details, support conditions, nosing, landing dimensions and code requirements.
