Metal Coating Coverage Calculator – Pipes, Tanks & Structures

Calculate approximate metal surface area and estimate coating quantity for pipes, tanks, plates, boxes and structural steel using coverage rate, film thickness or coating volume.

How coating coverage is estimated

Surface area
The selected geometry is converted into square metres of coating area. Only the surfaces selected in the calculator are included.
Coverage-rate method
Required coating volume = surface area ÷ usable coverage rate. Application efficiency is then applied to estimate practical material quantity.
DFT method
Theoretical wet coating volume = surface area × dry film thickness ÷ volume solids. Application efficiency is then used to estimate practical consumption.
Coverage rate should represent the actual usable coverage under the intended application conditions, not merely an ideal laboratory value.

Geometry included

Real structures contain welds, flanges, bolts, brackets, stiffeners, surface roughness, overlaps and inaccessible areas. Add an appropriate project allowance where these are significant.

Coating quantity examples

Coverage method
A 100 m² surface with 10 m²/L usable coverage requires 10 L theoretically. At 80% application efficiency, estimated consumption is 12.5 L.
DFT method
A 100 m² surface at 75 µm DFT and 50% volume solids requires 15 L theoretical wet coating volume before application losses.
Practical planning
The calculator shows theoretical area and coating requirement separately from efficiency-adjusted consumption so you can see where the material estimate comes from.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the coating area of a pipe? For a straight pipe, use π × outside diameter × length for the cylindrical outside surface. Circular ends can be added when required.

How much paint do I need for a metal tank? Select cylindrical tank, enter its diameter and length, then choose either a usable coverage rate or dry-film-thickness method.

What is coating coverage? Coverage describes how much surface area a given quantity of coating can cover under specified application conditions, commonly expressed as m²/L or ft²/gal.

What is dry film thickness? DFT is the thickness of the cured or dried coating layer remaining on the substrate after the coating has dried or cured.

Why does volume solids matter? Volume solids represent the fraction of wet coating volume that remains as coating material after volatile components leave. Lower volume solids generally require more wet coating volume for a given DFT.

Why is actual coating consumption higher than the theoretical quantity? Overspray, transfer losses, equipment residue, surface profile and application conditions can all increase practical consumption.

Can this calculate structural steel coating quantity? Yes. The simplified I-beam model provides a useful planning estimate, but complex fabricated structures should be broken into their actual surfaces for higher accuracy.

Does the calculator include surface roughness? No. Surface profile can increase actual coating consumption and should be handled with a project-specific allowance or manufacturer data.
