Glazing area calculation

Glass Pane Area Calculator | Glazing Size & Total Area

Calculate finished rectangular glass-pane dimensions from the frame opening and explicit installation deductions. The tool keeps pane area separate from frame area so glazing quantities are easier to audit.

Glass opening inputs

Glass dimensions should follow the selected glazing system's actual measurement and fabrication requirements. This tool is a rectangular-area estimator and does not size glass thickness or structural capacity.
Enter opening dimensions and pane count.

Glass pane area formula

Pane width = frame opening width − 2 × width deduction
Pane height = frame opening height − 2 × height deduction
Pane area = pane width × pane height
Total area = pane area × pane count

Why frame opening and glass size are not identical

A glazing system may require a clearance between the frame rebate and glass edge. The actual deductions vary with the frame, setting method, sealant, gaskets and fabrication requirements.

Area is not enough for glass specification

Glass selection can depend on span, loading, safety requirements, thickness, type and framing system. This calculator should not be used to determine glass thickness or structural adequacy.

Example calculation

A 1.2 m × 1.5 m opening with a 6 mm deduction on each side gives:

Pane width = 1.200 − 0.012 = 1.188 m
Pane height = 1.500 − 0.012 = 1.488 m
Area = 1.188 × 1.488 = 1.7677 m²

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator determine glass thickness?

No.

Can I calculate multiple identical panes?

Yes.

Should the deduction be the same on all sides?

The simplified model uses one width deduction and one height deduction for opposite sides. Actual fabrication requirements can differ.

Can this be used for curved glass?

No. It is designed for rectangular pane geometry.
