Window sill waterproofing

Window Sill Pan Length Calculator for Rough Openings

Estimate the sill-pan material length needed across rough window openings, including side returns, end-lap allowance and a practical cutting margin.

Sill pan inputs

This is a material-length estimate. Actual sill-pan geometry, corner treatment, turn-up dimensions and integration with the window/flashing system should follow the product installation detail.

Sill pan quantity method

For early quantity planning, each sill piece is treated as the rough-opening width plus the selected side return allowance and any specified end-lap allowance.

Pan / opening = opening width + side returns + end lap
Net total = pan / opening × opening count
Planning total = net total × (1 + cutting allowance ÷ 100)

Why returns are explicit

Side returns represent material extending beyond the nominal sill width. Keeping this value visible makes it easier to coordinate quantity takeoff with the actual sill-pan detail.

Do not treat this as a drainage design

The calculator does not establish drainage slopes, termination details, compatibility, flashing sequence or water-management performance. Those are system-specific design and installation questions.

Worked example

For ten 1.2 m openings, 100 mm total side return allowance and 50 mm end-lap allowance:

Per opening = 1.2 + 0.1 + 0.05 = 1.35 m
Net = 1.35 × 10 = 13.5 m
With 8% allowance = 14.58 m

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculate sill-pan width?

No. It calculates linear material length.

Can I include several windows?

Yes, when the openings use the same dimensions and detail.

Why include returns?

Returns can extend the pan beyond the rough opening, so they affect material quantity.

Does this approve a flashing detail?

No. Use the actual waterproofing and window installation specification.
