Window Flashing Tape Calculator for Rough Openings
Estimate flashing tape length around rough window openings while keeping overlap, number of openings and installation waste visible. The calculator is intended for quantity planning; the flashing system manufacturer's installation sequence controls the actual application.

Flashing tape requirement
How the flashing tape estimate works
The baseline assumes a continuous four-sided rectangular tape path around each rough opening. Multiplying that perimeter by the number of openings gives the geometric net length. A user-entered overlap is then added per opening, followed by a separate planning allowance.
Net perimeter = perimeter × openings × layers
Overlap addition = overlap × openings × layers
Planning length = (net perimeter + overlap addition) × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Why the installation sequence matters
Flashing systems differ in how sill, jamb and head transitions are assembled. Some use separate pieces, staged layers or manufacturer-specific laps. The calculator deliberately exposes the quantity assumptions instead of implying that one tape pattern is universal.
What the calculator does not decide
It does not determine tape width, compatibility, substrate preparation, adhesion, drainage details, required overlaps, sequencing or code compliance. Those requirements belong to the selected flashing system and project installation instructions.
Worked example
Ten openings measuring 1.2 m × 1.5 m have a single perimeter tape layer and an average 50 mm overlap allowance per opening.
Net = 5.4 × 10 = 54 m
Overlap = 0.05 × 10 = 0.5 m
Subtotal = 54.5 m
With 8% allowance = 58.86 m
Planning advice
Keep the tape estimate tied to the actual rough-opening dimensions rather than nominal window-unit dimensions when the waterproofing detail is installed around the opening.
For procurement, compare the resulting length with the manufacturer's roll length and consider whether the cut pattern leaves useful offcuts. A pure linear calculation does not optimize roll cutting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculate tape width?
No. It calculates length only.
Can I include multiple openings?
Yes, for identical opening dimensions.
Does overlap affect material quantity?
Yes. Extra overlap increases required tape.
Does this replace the flashing manufacturer's instructions?
No. Product-specific details should control installation.
