Structural steel coating area
How structural steel paint area is estimated
For a long uniform member, surface area can be approximated as exposed profile perimeter multiplied by member length. The difficult part is choosing the correct profile perimeter and defining what surfaces are actually included in the coating scope.
Paint volume = area × coats ÷ practical coverage × (1 + loss allowance)
Why profile selection matters
An I-beam has substantially more exposed perimeter than a solid rectangular bar of similar depth, while a hollow section adds both outer and inner surfaces only when both are included in the coating scope. The calculator uses the selected profile to make that distinction visible.
Worked example
For an I-section with 300 mm depth, 150 mm flange width, 8 mm web thickness and 12 mm flange thickness, the simplified exposed perimeter is calculated from the profile geometry. Ten 6 m members then produce a total area before coating loss and coat adjustments.
Paint quantity versus steel area
Theoretical litres per square metre are not universal. Product solids, application method, film thickness, surface profile and overspray can all affect practical consumption. Always use the actual coating system's published coverage and application requirements.
Surface scope decisions
Before procurement, clarify whether the specification includes member ends, connection plates, stiffeners, bolt heads, hidden contact surfaces, inside HSS surfaces or only exposed external surfaces. A perimeter-based estimate does not automatically capture those details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the result include all steel faces?
It estimates the selected profile's modeled perimeter. Additional components and hidden faces require separate treatment.
Can I calculate paint litres?
Yes, when practical coverage and coats are supplied.
Should I add paint loss?
A project-specific allowance can be entered.
Can this replace a coating specification?
No. The applicable coating system controls preparation, thickness and coverage requirements.
