Hot-dip galvanizing estimate

Steel Galvanizing Weight Calculator

Estimate the zinc coating mass and finished galvanized-steel weight from bare steel mass, coated surface area and a coating-mass requirement. Keep the coating contribution separate so procurement and weight checks remain auditable.

The calculator uses coating mass per area as the controlling input. Actual galvanizing results should be assessed against the applicable specification and supplier documentation.

How galvanized weight is calculated

A zinc coating contributes additional mass to the underlying steel. When the coating mass is known in grams per square metre, the coating contribution follows directly from coated area.

Zinc mass (kg) = area × coating mass ÷ 1000
Finished mass = bare steel mass + zinc mass

Worked example

For 1,000 kg of bare steel with 120 m² of coated surface and 610 g/m² of zinc coating, the zinc contribution is 73.2 kg. The estimated finished mass is therefore 1,073.2 kg before any additional handling or packaging consideration.

Why coating area matters

Two steel assemblies with the same bare mass can receive different zinc masses because their exposed surface areas differ. Thin, highly articulated or lightweight sections can have a larger coating area relative to their steel mass than compact sections.

Coating mass is not the same as a universal thickness

Coating mass and thickness are related but not interchangeable without knowing the coating density and the applicable measurement convention. When a galvanizing specification provides a coating mass requirement, enter that directly.

Important commercial limitation

Actual final weight can differ from a simple area-based estimate because zinc pickup depends on geometry, steel chemistry, immersion behavior, drainage, surface condition and the governing galvanizing specification.

What this calculator does not decide

It does not determine the required zinc coating class, galvanizing standard, inspection acceptance or whether a particular fabricated assembly is suitable for hot-dip galvanizing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does galvanizing add weight?

Yes. The zinc coating adds mass to the bare steel.

What is coating mass measured in?

A common input is grams per square metre, although applicable specifications may define coating requirements differently.

Can I calculate from coating thickness?

Not directly without a suitable density relationship and consistent measurement basis.

Is this exact finished weight?

No. It is a transparent estimate.
