Pipe bend geometry

Pipe Development Length Calculator for Bends

Calculate a developed pipe route from straight segments and circular bend arcs. Enter the centerline bend radius and angle explicitly so the developed length follows your actual routing geometry.

Pipe route inputs

Developed arc length uses the pipe centerline radius. If your drawing uses a different bend-radius convention, convert it before entering the value.
Enter straight segments and bend geometry.

Development-length formula

Arc length = π × radius × angle ÷ 180
Total arc length = arc length × bend count
Developed length = straight segment sum + total arc length

Why centerline radius matters

The neutral geometric path through a bend is represented here by a radius measured to the pipe centerline. Using inside radius or outside radius instead changes the result.

What this calculator does not do

It does not create a fabrication spool, compensate for machine springback, determine bend deduction tables, or choose bend tooling.

Worked example

Three straight segments total 3.0 m. Two 90° bends have a 0.3 m centerline radius.

Arc / bend = π × 0.3 × 90 ÷ 180 = 0.471 m
Total arc = 2 × 0.471 = 0.942 m
Developed length = 3.0 + 0.942 = 3.942 m

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as a pipe cut-length formula?

No. This tool calculates the geometric developed centerline route.

Can I use angles other than 90°?

Yes, from 0° through 360° within the simplified single-radius arc model.

Does it account for fitting takeoffs?

No. Add those separately when converting the route to fabrication cut dimensions.
