Laminate Flooring Plank Calculator
Plan laminate flooring planks and cartons from room dimensions, plank size, perimeter expansion gap and cutting allowance. Compare both laying directions so the material plan is more useful than an area-only estimate.

How laminate plank quantity is calculated
The calculator first removes the perimeter expansion gap from the room dimensions. It then calculates the floor area and the mathematical plank minimum.
Usable width = room width − 2 × gap
Area minimum = ceiling(usable area ÷ plank area)
Planning quantity = ceiling(area minimum × (1 + waste))
Why layout direction still matters
The area minimum is the same mathematical lower bound for either orientation, but rows, end cuts and starter-piece choices can change practical waste. The comparison gives a quick directional check before the final installation layout is set out.
Worked example
For a 6 × 4 m room with a 10 mm perimeter gap, the usable rectangle is 5.98 × 3.98 m. A 1,380 × 190 mm plank covers 0.2622 m². The calculator determines the minimum plank count and then adds the selected allowance before rounding to full cartons.
Why keeping spare planks can matter
Future repairs are easier when spare pieces from the same product and production batch are retained. This is particularly useful for directional textures and finishes that may be difficult to match later.
What this model does not simulate
It does not perform a complete board-by-board nesting simulation, account for every doorway and irregular corner, or decide the required starter/end-piece dimensions. A detailed floor plan can produce a better cutting estimate for complex rooms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the expansion gap reduce flooring quantity?
It slightly reduces the finished floor rectangle but is normally a required installation detail.
Can I compare plank directions?
Yes.
Why add waste?
To cover cutting, damage and unusable remnants.
Can I calculate cartons?
Yes.
