Glass Spacer Bar Length Calculator for IGU Frames
Calculate spacer bar length for rectangular insulated glass units, then separate theoretical perimeter from fabrication allowance and stock-length planning. The calculation keeps the assumptions visible for glazing procurement and workshop estimating.

How IGU spacer length is calculated
For a rectangular unit, the geometric spacer path follows the four sides of the glazing assembly.
Net spacer = perimeter × number of IGUs
Planning spacer = net spacer × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Stock pieces = ceiling(planning spacer ÷ stock length)
Why the spacer calculation is only an estimate
Insulating glass production can use different spacer profiles and fabrication systems. Corner joints, bend radius, bar connectors and manufacturing tolerances can influence how much material is actually consumed.
Perimeter quantity versus cutting plan
The stock-piece result assumes simple division by stock length. It does not optimize individual cut sequences across a batch. A real production shop may improve utilization by combining offcuts between units.
Keep the spacer specification separate
This calculator does not choose spacer width, material, thermal properties, sealant system or gas-fill specification. Those are component and production decisions outside a simple length calculation.
Worked example
For twelve IGUs measuring 1,200 mm × 1,500 mm:
Net spacer = 12 × 5.4 = 64.8 m
With 3% allowance = 66.744 m
The final material order should still reflect the actual spacer fabrication process and stock length.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculate insulated glass spacer width?
No. It calculates linear spacer material quantity.
Can I calculate several identical units?
Yes.
Is the geometric perimeter always the production quantity?
No. Manufacturing details can change consumption.
Should a supplier's fabrication method override this estimate?
Yes. Product-specific manufacturing instructions should take precedence.
