Shelving quantity planning

Glass Shelf Quantity Calculator | Area, Shelves & Glass

Estimate how many glass shelves fit within a cabinet or display unit, calculate shelf dimensions and convert the result into total glass area. Spacing and shelf thickness remain explicit assumptions instead of hidden constants.

Cabinet and shelf inputs

The shelf count is a geometric planning estimate. It does not verify shelf load, support spacing, glass thickness, safety glass type or structural capacity.
Enter cabinet dimensions and shelf spacing.

Shelf count method

Approximate shelf count = floor(usable height ÷ desired clear spacing)
Shelf width = cabinet width − support deductions
Net glass area = shelf width × shelf depth × shelf count
Planning area = net area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

Why clear spacing and glass thickness are separate

A shelf consumes physical thickness, but users normally think about usable clear spacing between shelves. Keeping both values visible helps distinguish the geometric layout from the final component selection.

Load capacity needs separate engineering

Glass shelf performance depends on span, thickness, support arrangement, glass type and load. This calculator deliberately does not turn a shelf count into a structural recommendation.

Worked example

A cabinet has 1.8 m of usable height and the intended clear spacing is 300 mm:

floor(1.8 ÷ 0.3) = 6 shelves

If the usable shelf width is 890 mm and depth is 350 mm, net glass area is about 6 × 0.89 × 0.35 = 1.869 m².

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this choose the glass thickness?

No.

Can it estimate shelf count?

Yes, from usable height and target clear spacing.

Does it include cutting allowance?

Yes.

Does it verify shelf load capacity?

No. That requires separate design and product information.
