Expansion Joint Filler Quantity Calculator — Plan Strip Length

Calculate total joint run, filler area, nominal volume and strip count while keeping cutting allowance separate from the actual joint geometry.

Verify the actual filler product width, thickness and installation detail. Some systems do not use the full joint depth as a single filler dimension.

Filler quantity formula

Total run = joint count × average run length
Planned run = total run × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Area = planned run × filler width

Nominal filler volume is the planned area multiplied by filler thickness.

Why linear length can matter more than volume

Filler products are often purchased as strips or sheets. The linear run can therefore be the most useful procurement number, while area and volume provide additional checks.

Worked example

12 runs × 8 m gives 96 m of net joint. With 5% allowance, planned run is 100.8 m. At 100 mm width, filler area is 10.08 m². At 2.4 m per strip, 42 strips are required.

Planning around interruptions

Ends, corners, intersections and changes in width can change the cut pattern. Measure unusual sections separately rather than forcing every joint into one average length if the difference is material.
