Paver joint-fill planning

Paving Joint Sand Calculator

Estimate how much sand is needed to fill paving joints from area, paver dimensions, joint width and joint depth. The calculator converts joint geometry into volume and, when a bulk density is supplied, into an approximate purchase mass.

Joint geometry

kg/m³ when metric area is entered.
The void-volume model assumes a regular paver grid. Edge irregularities, joint sweeping losses and compaction can increase actual consumption.
Enter paving area and joint dimensions.

Calculation method

For a repeating rectangular paver field, the approximate total joint length per square metre can be estimated from the reciprocal of paver dimensions in the two directions. Multiplying that joint length by joint width and depth gives an approximate void volume.

Joint length per area ≈ 1/paver length + 1/paver width
Joint volume ≈ area × joint width × joint depth × joint length per area
Purchase volume = theoretical volume × (1 + allowance)

Why density is an input

Sand is sold by different commercial measures, and bulk density changes with grading, moisture and packing. The calculator therefore does not invent a universal conversion from volume to mass.

Use the result correctly

Use the theoretical volume to compare designs and the adjusted value for procurement. Follow the actual joint-fill product and installation system requirements for the final quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sand is needed between paving joints?

Estimate the total joint void from paver geometry, joint width and depth, then add a practical allowance.

Does thicker joint sand require more material?

Yes. Deeper joints increase the void volume.

Can mass be calculated?

Yes, with an explicit bulk-density assumption.
