Electrical raceway check

Electrical Conduit Fill Calculator

Calculate conductor cross-sectional occupancy and compare it with the selected raceway-fill limit.

Conduit and conductor inputs

NEC-style checks commonly use 53%, 31% and 40% depending on the number of conductors/cables. Local code, raceway type, conductor construction and exceptions must be verified separately.
Enter conduit and conductor dimensions.

Conduit fill formula

For circular conductors treated by their outside diameter, each conductor area is approximated as a circle. The total conductor area is compared with the conduit internal cross-sectional area.

Conduit area = π × (ID ÷ 2)²
Conductor area = count × π × (OD ÷ 2)²
Fill % = conductor area ÷ conduit area × 100

Why actual conductor dimensions matter

Two conductors with the same nominal wire size can have different overall dimensions because of insulation and construction. For a precise check, use the applicable published dimensions for the actual conductor or cable.

Important NEC context

NFPA 70 Chapter 9 Table 1 uses 53% for one conductor/cable, 31% for two, and 40% for more than two in complete raceway systems, with conditions and exceptions. This calculator uses those values only as selectable reference limits.

Separate electrical checks

Conduit fill does not establish ampacity, derating, grounding, bending space, pulling tension or box-fill compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix conductor sizes?

This simple version assumes a representative outside diameter. For mixed sizes, calculate each group separately and sum their actual areas.

Does the tool replace an electrical code check?

No. It is a calculation aid.
