Electrical Back Box Quantity Calculator
Turn a device schedule into a transparent back-box procurement quantity. Keep single, double and multi-gang assumptions separate instead of hiding the whole takeoff inside one total.

How this quantity estimate works
The calculator treats each entered gang configuration as a distinct procurement line. That matters because replacing a double-gang box with two single boxes may not be physically or commercially equivalent. The base requirement is the sum of the approved configurations, and the spare allowance is added afterward.
Spare boxes = ceiling(base × spare %) − base
Planning quantity = ceiling(base × (1 + spare %))
Example
For 42 single-gang, 18 double-gang, 6 triple-gang and 4 other boxes, the base schedule is 70 boxes. With a 7% spare allowance, the planning quantity is 75 boxes.
Why the gang breakdown stays visible
A total quantity alone is weak for procurement. Keeping each configuration visible makes substitutions, shortages and late design changes easier to detect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this determine the correct box depth?
No. Depth depends on conductors, devices, mounting conditions and the applicable box-fill or installation requirements.
Can spare boxes be zero?
Yes. Enter zero when the project has a confirmed schedule and no procurement allowance is required.
Can one device use a different box type?
Yes. Count the actual approved box configuration rather than assuming one generic box fits every point.
