Board layout comparison
Drywall Panel Orientation Planner: Vertical vs Horizontal
Compare two drywall installation directions using the same wall and board dimensions. See sheets, seam counts and approximate cutting exposure before deciding how to lay out the boards.
Wall and board dimensions
This planner compares rectangular coverage geometry. Joint placement, fire/acoustic assemblies, openings, framing requirements and board manufacturer's installation instructions can change the practical choice.

What changes when drywall is rotated?
Turning a rectangular sheet changes how many sheets span the wall width and how many courses are needed to reach wall height. That can alter sheet count, horizontal or vertical seam exposure and the amount of material that must be cut.
Comparison method
Sheets across = ceiling(wall length ÷ board span in that orientation)
Courses = ceiling(wall height ÷ board height in that orientation)
Total sheets = sheets across × courses
Courses = ceiling(wall height ÷ board height in that orientation)
Total sheets = sheets across × courses
What is not optimized
The tool does not solve two-dimensional cutting stock, openings or staggered seams. It is a fast orientation comparison rather than a complete cutting optimizer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the tool tell me which direction is mandatory?
No.
Can horizontal orientation use more boards?
Yes, depending on wall proportions and board size.
Does this include openings?
No.
Does fewer sheets always mean less waste?
No. Cut patterns and reusable offcuts can change the outcome.
