Structural grid setout

Column Centerline Locator

Find a column center from a known grid intersection and explicit X/Y offsets. Optional column dimensions convert the center coordinate into column face coordinates for checking.

Grid reference

The column dimensions are used only to calculate face locations. Structural sizing and design remain outside this tool.

Column centerline calculation

The grid intersection acts as the reference coordinate. The design offset is added algebraically to obtain the center. Half the column dimensions is then applied in each direction to calculate approximate face coordinates.

Center X = grid X + offset X
Center Y = grid Y + offset Y
Faces = center ± dimension ÷ 2

Example

A grid intersection at (12, 8) with offsets (+0.15, −0.10) gives a column center at (12.15, 7.90). For a 450 mm square column, the faces are 225 mm either side of the center.

Why centerlines matter

Gridlines often locate structural elements, but columns can be intentionally offset because of architectural alignment, façade conditions or structural requirements. Keeping the offset explicit makes the setout easier to audit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the offset be negative?

Yes.

Can column dimensions be zero?

Yes, if only the center coordinate is required.

Does this determine the structural center of gravity?

No. It is purely a geometric centerline tool.
