Right-Angle Setout Calculator
Calculate the missing side and expected diagonal for a right-angle layout, then compare two measured diagonals to quantify the geometric mismatch.

Right-angle method
The theoretical diagonal is obtained from the Pythagorean relationship. For a rectangle, opposite diagonals should be equal. The calculator therefore gives both the ideal diagonal and a practical difference check against the two measured values.
Diagonal mismatch = |D₁ − D₂|
Example
For an 8 m × 6 m rectangle, the theoretical diagonal is 10 m. Measured diagonals of 10.00 m and 10.02 m differ by 0.02 m, which is inside a 0.05 m user-entered tolerance.
What this check tells you
Equal diagonals strongly support rectangular geometry. They do not, by themselves, confirm elevation, absolute coordinates or correspondence with the issued survey control.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why use diagonals?
They provide a fast geometric check that the opposite corners are consistent with a rectangle.
Can tolerance be zero?
Yes, although field measurements rarely behave as exact mathematical values.
Is this a structural check?
No. It is a geometric setout check.
