Building setout geometry

Construction Gridline Coordinate Calculator

Generate a practical coordinate schedule for building grid intersections from a defined origin and cumulative spacing. The tool keeps X and Y dimensions separate so irregular bays remain traceable.

Grid definition

This version uses uniform bay spacing on each axis. For a project with irregular bays, calculate each axis segment separately and carry the resulting cumulative coordinates into the setout schedule.
Enter origin, bay counts and spacing.

How grid coordinates are calculated

The origin is treated as the first gridline intersection. Each following X gridline advances by one bay spacing and each Y gridline advances by one Y spacing. The resulting intersections can be used as a planning schedule for setout checks.

Xᵢ = origin X + i × X spacing
Yⱼ = origin Y + j × Y spacing
Total intersections = (X bays + 1) × (Y bays + 1)

Example

With a 5 m X spacing and 4 m Y spacing, the intersection at X gridline 3 and Y gridline 2 is located 15 m from the origin in X and 8 m in Y.

Setout control

Coordinates derived from design dimensions should be checked against established site control, benchmark information and the issued construction drawings before physical setout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator label grids A, B, C?

It labels rows numerically so the coordinate relationship remains unambiguous.

Can negative origins be used?

Yes. This is useful when project coordinates are referenced to an external datum.

Does it perform surveying?

No. It creates a dimension-derived coordinate schedule.
