Watch Strap Keepers Position Calculator – Floating Loop Placement
Find the best positions for one or two floating keepers so the excess strap tail stays neat and secure.
How keepers work
- The long end passes through the buckle and the excess is tucked under the keepers
- A single floating keeper is usually placed 8–18 mm after the buckle
- Two keepers give better control on longer tails
- Sewn-in keepers are fixed; floating keepers can be moved
Goal: the free tail should be held flat against the strap with minimal flapping and no large empty gaps.
Typical recommendations
1 keeperPlace roughly 10–15 mm after the buckle tongue exits
2 keepersFirst \~10 mm after buckle, second \~25–35 mm further along the tail
These are practical starting points. Final position depends on leather thickness, keeper width, and personal preference.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a floating keeper? A sliding loop that can be moved along the strap, unlike a sewn-in keeper that is permanently fixed.
Should the keeper be tight? Snug enough to hold the tail without crushing the leather or making adjustment difficult.
Can I add a second keeper later? Yes – many aftermarket floating keepers are available in matching widths and colours.
Does keeper position affect comfort? Yes. Poor placement can create a thick stack under the wrist or leave the tail free to catch on clothing.
