How UPS efficiency losses are calculated
UPS efficiency describes how much electrical input is converted into useful output under the specified operating condition. When efficiency is below 100%, the difference appears as internal energy loss.
UPS input power = Useful output power ÷ Efficiency
Loss power = UPS input power − Useful output power
The loss is multiplied by the annual hours during which the entered load applies.
Why load-dependent efficiency matters
UPS efficiency can vary with loading and operating mode. This tool therefore uses a single efficiency value representing the selected operating point rather than pretending that one number applies to every load condition.
What the fixed energy input is for
Use the optional fixed energy field for an independently known annual energy component that should be included in the UPS energy budget but is not represented by the conversion-loss calculation.
Limitations
- One operating point is modeled.
- No nonlinear efficiency curve is inferred.
- Power quality and thermal effects are outside the calculation.
- Electricity price is user-defined.
FAQs
Can efficiency be 100%?
Yes. The modeled conversion loss then becomes zero.
Can the output load be zero?
Yes mathematically, though the result then represents no useful load and will not describe the UPS's real standby consumption unless fixed energy is entered separately.
Does this calculate battery losses?
No. The calculation focuses on UPS conversion efficiency.
Why use a load-share percentage?
It lets you apply a particular efficiency point to only part of the annual operating schedule.
