Tyre Rotation Pattern Finder

Find a suitable tyre rotation pattern from the tyre and vehicle configuration you enter. Manufacturer instructions always take priority when they specify a different pattern.

Rotation pattern—

How tyre rotation patterns are chosen

Rotation depends on the vehicle's drivetrain and whether the tyres can physically move between axle positions. Directional tyres impose an important constraint because their direction of rotation should be maintained.

Non-directional, same-size tyres

Common rotation patterns include rearward-cross for front-wheel-drive applications and forward-cross for rear-wheel-drive applications. An X pattern may also be used where permitted. These are general patterns, not a replacement for vehicle-specific instructions.

Directional tyres

A directional tyre should remain on the same side unless the tyre is removed from the wheel and remounted so the tread direction remains correct. A simple side-to-side swap is therefore not automatically appropriate.

Staggered fitment

When front and rear tyre sizes differ, ordinary front-to-rear rotation may not be possible. In such a configuration, the correct pattern can be limited to side-to-side changes or no routine cross-axle movement, depending on the exact tyre and vehicle arrangement.

Asymmetric tyres

An asymmetric tread may have an inside/outside mounting requirement. That requirement is separate from directional rotation and must be preserved.

Uneven wear changes the job

If a tyre has unusual wear, rotation should not be used as a substitute for diagnosing alignment, inflation or suspension problems.

FAQs

Can I rotate directional tyres side to side?

Not as a simple wheel swap if doing so reverses the intended rotation direction. Follow the tyre manufacturer's instructions.

Can staggered tyres rotate front to rear?

Not when the sizes or wheel fitment prevent that movement.

Should the vehicle manual override this result?

Yes. Manufacturer-specific instructions take priority.
