Pergola Beam Spacing Planner: Positions & Count

Generate repeated timber-member positions from an overall pergola dimension, target spacing and edge offsets. Use the schedule before cutting while keeping structural sizing outside the tool.

Pergola layout inputs

This planner does not determine beam size, attachment method, wind resistance, snow/live load capacity or code compliance.
Enter layout width and spacing.

How the pergola spacing planner works

The usable run is the overall width minus the start and end offsets. In maximum-spacing mode the calculator uses enough members to keep regular gaps at or below the target. In even-distribution mode the same number of positions is redistributed so the repeated spacing is uniform across the usable run.

Usable run = overall width − start offset − end offset
Maximum-spacing intervals = ceiling(usable run ÷ target spacing)
Even spacing = usable run ÷ intervals

Why edge offsets matter

Two layouts with identical overall width can produce different member positions when the first and last members are intentionally held away from the edges.

Structural limitation

Positioning is only one part of pergola design. Beam dimensions, connection details and load resistance should be established independently by the project design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep the final spacing below the target?

Yes, in maximum-spacing mode.

Can all interior spaces be equal?

Yes, using even-distribution mode.

Does it calculate beam sizes?

No.

Can it be used for other timber members?

Yes, when the layout is based on repeated spacing.
