Joist Spacing Calculator: Generate a Floor & Deck Layout
Generate a joist position schedule across a floor or deck framing width. The calculator focuses on layout geometry and makes the last bay visible rather than silently forcing an even division.

Understanding joist spacing layouts
Joist spacing is normally interpreted as the distance between adjacent member centerlines. The geometric layout therefore starts from a defined edge and repeats the selected spacing until the opposite edge must be handled.
Uneven final bay
If a width cannot be divided exactly by the selected spacing, the final bay is shorter. Showing that final dimension is important because an apparently simple “number of joists” result does not show the actual field layout.
Why this is not structural design
The correct joist spacing can depend on decking, floor finish, loading, joist size, span, local requirements and the designed framing system. This calculator assumes the spacing has already been chosen.
Using the schedule on site
Positions are measured from the selected starting edge. For real construction, keep a consistent reference face and confirm whether the drawing dimension is to member centerline, face or another reference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the calculator choose 16-inch or 24-inch spacing?
No. You select the required spacing.
What is the final bay?
The distance from the last regular position to the opposite edge position.
Can it be used for floor joists?
Yes for layout planning.
Can it size joists?
No.
