Bedding material takeoff

Sand Bedding Quantity Calculator

Estimate bedding sand for pavers, slabs and general bedding applications from the covered area and specified bedding thickness, with density and allowance shown separately.

Bedding inputs

Thickness should come from the relevant paving or construction specification. Density is a bulk quantity input, not particle density.
Enter bedding area and thickness.

How bedding sand quantity is calculated

The calculation treats the bedding layer as a uniform slab over the entered area.

Base volume = area × thickness ÷ 1,000
Planning volume = base volume × (1 + allowance)
Tonnes = planning volume × bulk density

Worked example

For 200 m² at 40 mm thickness, the geometric bedding volume is 8 m³. With a 7% allowance, the planning volume becomes 8.56 m³. At 1.6 t/m³, that is about 13.70 tonnes.

Why thickness should not be guessed

Bedding requirements vary with the installation system. The calculator converts a specified thickness into material quantity; it does not decide the correct construction detail.

Paver bedding versus pipe bedding

Paver bedding is usually modeled as a broad uniform layer. Pipe bedding can have side zones and haunching that depend on trench and pipe geometry. For that application, use a trench-specific calculation instead of assuming a full-area layer.

Limitations

This estimate does not determine paving-system design, bedding quality, drainage performance or pipe-support requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I calculate tonnes?

Yes.

Does moisture change density?

Bulk density can change with moisture and packing.

Can this be used for pipe trenches?

Only for simple area-based bedding; detailed trench geometry should use a trench bedding calculation.

Should I add allowance?

A documented project allowance is useful.
