Formula

For a two-bend offset: Travel: T = O / sin(θ) Offset: O = T × sin(θ) Run: R = T × cos(θ) Bend angle: θ = asin(O / T) Travel multiplier: M = 1 / sin(θ) Therefore: T = O × M Center-to-center diagonal: T = √(O² + R²) where: O = offset T = true travel R = run θ = bend angle
Common travel multipliers: 30° ≈ 2.000, 45° ≈ 1.414, 60° ≈ 1.155. The calculator computes the exact multiplier for the entered angle.
Actual pipe layout must account for the specific fitting's takeout, bend radius, pipe diameter and fabrication convention. Enter the total fitting takeout only when you need a cut-length estimate from a center-to-center dimension.

Example

Required offset
300 mm.
Bend angle
45°.
Travel multiplier
1 ÷ sin(45°) ≈ 1.4142.
True travel
300 × 1.4142 ≈ 424.26 mm.
Run
424.26 × cos(45°) = 300 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a pipe offset calculator do? It determines the geometry required to move a pipe centerline from one position to another using two bends.

What is true travel? True travel is the diagonal distance along the pipe between the two offset bend locations.

What is the travel multiplier? It is the factor used to convert a required offset into true travel: 1 ÷ sin(angle).

What is the 45-degree offset multiplier? The theoretical multiplier is approximately 1.4142.

What is the 30-degree multiplier? The theoretical multiplier is 2.0.

What is the 60-degree multiplier? The theoretical multiplier is approximately 1.1547.

Can I calculate the bend angle if I know offset and travel? Yes. The calculator uses θ = asin(offset ÷ travel).

Does fitting takeout matter? Yes. Takeout matters when converting center-to-center dimensions into actual pipe cut lengths. The calculator keeps takeout separate so it does not silently alter the basic offset geometry.

Can this calculate a rolling offset? This version calculates a planar two-bend offset. A three-dimensional rolling offset requires additional elevation and horizontal offset inputs.
