Sheet Metal Transition Piece Calculator

Calculate centered rectangular transition geometry, slant lengths, perimeter, wall area and estimated material requirements.

Transition type

Centered rectangular-to-rectangular transition. The two openings share a common centerline.

Large opening

Small opening

Transition height

Fabrication allowances

These allowances are material estimates. Actual seam, flange and trim requirements depend on the joining method.

Formula

For a centered rectangular transition: ΔL = (Large Length − Small Length) / 2 ΔW = (Large Width − Small Width) / 2 Length-direction slant: SL = √(H² + ΔL²) Width-direction slant: SW = √(H² + ΔW²) Large perimeter: PL = 2 × (Large Length + Large Width) Small perimeter: PS = 2 × (Small Length + Small Width) Front/back wall area: AF = [(Large Length + Small Length) / 2] × SL Side wall area: AS = [(Large Width + Small Width) / 2] × SW Total wall area: A = 2AF + 2AS
This is a centered rectangular transition calculation. Exact flat-pattern cut lines require geometric development/triangulation because the four tapered walls generally have different geometry when both length and width change.

Example

Large opening
500 × 400 mm.
Small opening
300 × 250 mm.
Transition height
300 mm.
Length transition
(500 − 300) / 2 = 100 mm per side.
Width transition
(400 − 250) / 2 = 75 mm per side.
Slant lengths
Length direction ≈ 316.23 mm. Width direction ≈ 309.23 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a transition piece? A transition piece connects two openings with different dimensions, commonly in sheet-metal ducting, hoppers, chutes and industrial fabrication.

What does centered mean? The smaller opening is centered relative to the larger opening, so the reduction is divided equally on opposite sides.

Why are there two slant lengths? When both length and width change, the front/back walls and side walls can have different horizontal offsets and therefore different slant lengths.

Does this calculate the exact flat pattern? It calculates the principal geometry and wall area. Exact fabrication cut lines for a rectangular transition should be developed using triangulation or validated CAD development.

Can I use this for HVAC duct transitions? Yes, it is useful for preliminary sizing and material-area calculations for centered rectangular transitions.

Can this calculate a rectangular-to-round transition? No. A rectangular-to-round transition requires a different development method.

Can this calculate an offset transition? No. Offset and eccentric transitions require additional positional dimensions and a different geometric development.

Are seam allowances included? Yes. Optional seam and trim allowances can be entered for a preliminary material estimate.
