Paver base and bedding quantity

Paver Bedding Layer Calculator

Calculate the bedding material needed beneath a paving area from its surface area and planned layer thickness. Add bulk density and an ordering allowance to turn the geometric volume into a more useful procurement estimate.

Layer inputs

kg/m³ for metric input.
Use the intended compacted layer thickness when sizing installed volume. Procurement often requires a separate allowance for handling, grading and compaction effects.
Enter paving area and layer thickness.

Formula and planning logic

The installed bedding volume is simply the plan area multiplied by the intended layer thickness.

Compacted volume = area × thickness
Adjusted volume = compacted volume × (1 + allowance)
Estimated mass = adjusted volume × bulk density

Why thickness is critical

A small change in thickness can materially change the material quantity on a large paving area. Do not silently replace the project's specified thickness with a generic value.

Compacted versus loose material

This tool reports geometric installed volume and an allowance-based procurement volume. Loose stockpile volume can differ because of compaction, moisture and handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much bedding material do I need under pavers?

Multiply area by the planned installed thickness.

Should thickness be before or after compaction?

Enter the basis used by your design; distinguish installed thickness from loose procurement volume.

Can it estimate tonnes?

Yes, with a density assumption.
