Temporary construction protection

Temporary Opening Closure Material Calculator

Estimate sheet, board or panel material required to temporarily cover unused construction openings. Add an overlap around each opening and a cutting allowance to create a practical planning quantity.

Opening and cover inputs

This calculator estimates material coverage only. It does not specify how an opening should be secured or whether a temporary closure is adequate for weather, fall protection, fire separation, security or site safety.
Enter opening dimensions and overlap.

Coverage calculation

Cover width = opening width + 2 × overlap
Cover height = opening height + 2 × overlap
Cover / opening = cover width × cover height
Planning area = cover area × opening count × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

Why overlap is a separate input

A temporary closure normally needs material extending beyond the opening so it can be fixed to the surrounding surface. The amount required depends on the selected cover material and site detail, so the calculator does not hide that assumption.

Temporary closure is not permanent construction

The calculated area does not address structural restraint, wind pressure, impact, moisture exposure, fire performance or worker protection. Those requirements require a suitable site-specific system.

Worked example

A 1.2 m × 1.8 m opening is covered with 150 mm overlap on every side:

Cover = (1.2 + 0.3) × (1.8 + 0.3) = 3.15 m²
Six openings = 18.9 m²
With 10% allowance = 20.79 m²

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this choose a cover material?

No.

Does it include overlap?

Yes.

Does it make a temporary closure safe?

No. Safety and performance depend on the actual site condition and protection system.

Can I calculate several openings?

Yes.
