How Old Gold Value Is Calculated

Old jewellery is often valued differently from new jewellery because the original workmanship and retail purchase price may not be recovered in a resale transaction.

Gold-Alloy Weight = Gross Weight − Non-Gold Weight
Fine Gold = Gold-Alloy Weight × Karat ÷ 24
Metal Value = Fine Gold × Current 24K Price
Estimated Payout = Metal Value × (1 − Deduction)

Old Gold vs New Jewellery Value

The original purchase price of jewellery can contain making charges, design premium, brand value, taxes and other costs. Those components are not automatically retained when the item is sold as old gold.

This calculator focuses on the current metal-based value of old jewellery, not what the item originally cost.

Example: Old 18K Jewellery

Suppose an old piece has 25 grams gross weight, 3 grams of non-gold material, and is 18K. The gold-alloy weight is 22 grams.

22 × 18 ÷ 24 = 16.5 g fine gold

At a current 24K price of 100 per gram, the theoretical metal value is 1,650. If a buyer deducts 8%, the estimated payout before any separate stone value is 1,518.

Why Old Gold Offers Differ

FactorWhy It Matters
PurityDetermines fine-gold content.
WeightDetermines how much material is being sold.
Gold PriceChanges the underlying metal value.
TestingCan affect accepted purity.
DeductionsReduce the actual payout.
GemstonesMay be valued separately or excluded.

Does the Original Jewellery Price Matter?

It can matter for sentimental or collectible value, but a straightforward old-gold transaction often focuses primarily on the recoverable metal and the buyer's current pricing policy.

A designer, antique or collectible piece may be worth more than its gold content, in which case a specialized appraisal is more appropriate.

Important Limitations

This calculator estimates a metal-based old-gold payout. It does not appraise collectible value, antique value, designer value or gemstone quality.

Actual buyers may apply different deductions, purity testing procedures and payout formulas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is old gold value calculated?

It can be estimated from gold-alloy weight, purity, current gold price and applicable buyer deductions.

Is old gold worth the same as new gold jewellery?

Not necessarily. New jewellery may include workmanship and retail charges that are not recovered in old-gold resale.

Do buyers pay for old jewellery making charges?

Do not assume they do. Actual buyer policies vary.

Does old gold value depend on karat?

Yes. Karat changes the amount of fine gold in the alloy.

Can gemstones affect an old gold valuation?

Yes. Gold-only calculations should normally use the gold-alloy weight, with stones handled separately where appropriate.
