How Gold Buyback Value Works

A buyback calculator is different from a melt-value calculator because it starts from the actual payout terms offered by a buyer or dealer.

Fine Gold = Weight × Karat ÷ 24
Metal Value = Fine Gold × Market Price

You can then enter the buyer's quoted price per gram of fine gold, or a buyback percentage of the theoretical metal value.

Buyback Price vs Market Gold Price

A dealer may quote a buyback price that is lower than the current market reference price. This can reflect margin, operating costs, testing, refining, risk and the dealer's business model.

Use the actual quoted buyback rate when you have it. It is more meaningful than assuming a universal payout percentage.

Example

For 20 grams of 18K jewellery, the fine-gold content is 15 grams. If a dealer quotes a buyback price of 92 per gram of fine gold:

15 × 92 = 1,380

The estimated buyback payout is 1,380 in the same currency as the entered dealer rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gold jewellery buyback value?

It is an estimated amount a dealer may pay under a stated buyback formula.

How is buyback value different from melt value?

Melt value is theoretical metal value; buyback value uses the dealer's actual payout terms.

Can I use a dealer's buyback price per gram?

Yes. The direct-rate mode is designed for that.

Does a dealer buy back making charges?

Do not assume so. Enter the actual dealer terms if any component is reimbursed.

Does this calculator guarantee a dealer offer?

No. It estimates the result from your inputs.
