Mulch Volume Calculator — Area, Depth, Bags and Cubic Yards

Calculate the mulch volume your landscape area needs at a chosen installed depth, then translate that volume into common purchasing units.

Mulch quantity inputs

m²
mm

m³ per bag
kg/m³; optional mass estimate
Use the actual installed depth as the design input. Keep any allowance separate so you can see whether extra material comes from the geometry or procurement planning.
Enter area and depth, then calculate.

The mulch volume formula

Volume = area × depth

Convert millimetres to metres first. For example, 75 mm equals 0.075 m. Planning allowance is then applied to the calculated volume.

Depth has a direct effect

80 m² × 50 mm = 4.00 m³
80 m² × 75 mm = 6.00 m³
80 m² × 100 mm = 8.00 m³

Changing depth changes material quantity proportionally. This is why the intended installation depth should be established before ordering.

Bulk versus bagged mulch

Bulk mulch is often easier to reconcile in cubic metres or cubic yards, while packaged mulch may be purchased by bag volume. A user-entered bulk density can provide an optional mass estimate, but density varies with mulch type and moisture.

Worked example

For 80 m² at 75 mm, net volume is 6.00 m³. With 8% allowance, planning volume is 6.48 m³. At 0.05 m³ per bag, that is 130 bags when whole bags are required.
