Motor Load Factor Calculator — See How Heavily a Motor Is Loaded
Compare average motor load with peak load and rated output to understand how heavily a motor operates across its normal duty.
Load factor inputs
Load factor versus motor loading
Load factor describes how consistently a system uses its observed peak. A motor can have a high load factor while still operating below its rated output if the process is steady at a lower level.
Average versus peak
An average load of 18 kW and peak load of 25 kW produces a load factor of 72%. That means the average operating demand was 72% of the observed peak.
Rated utilization
If the same motor is rated for 30 kW, the average loading is 60% of rated output and the peak is 83.3% of rated output. This second view helps explain how the motor itself is being loaded.
Why the observation window matters
A 24-hour average can tell a different story from a weekly or production-cycle average. Enter a period appropriate to the decision you are making.
Limitations
This simple calculator assumes the load values already represent the operating condition you want to analyze. It does not process interval measurements or motor torque data.
Frequently asked questions
Can load factor exceed 100%?
Not when average load is genuinely calculated from the same period and peak is the maximum over that period. Such a result indicates inconsistent inputs.
Is load factor the same as efficiency?
No. Load factor describes how average demand compares with peak demand; efficiency compares useful output with input.
