Mortar Binder Ratio Calculator

Break a mortar formulation into its binder components and see the total binder mass, percentage contribution of each component and sand-to-binder ratio. This is an analysis tool, not a mix-design approval.

How binder ratio is calculated

Total binder is the sum of the binder components that you choose to include.

Total binder = cement + lime + pozzolan + other binder
Component % = component mass ÷ total binder × 100
Sand:binder = sand mass ÷ total binder mass

Worked example

For 25 kg cement, 5 kg pozzolan and 90 kg sand, total binder is 30 kg. Sand-to-binder ratio is 90 ÷ 30 = 3.0 by mass.

Binder = 25 + 5 = 30 kg
Sand:binder = 90 ÷ 30 = 3.00:1

Binder composition is more informative than a single ratio

Two mixes can have the same total binder mass while using different proportions of cement and other binder components. Showing each component percentage prevents that distinction from being hidden.

Ratio is not a performance guarantee

Mortar performance depends on materials, water content, aggregate grading, curing, air content, workmanship and the requirements of the intended application. This tool describes the entered formulation; it does not certify performance.

Limitations

This tool assumes that all binder quantities are on a consistent mass basis. It does not determine the correct formulation for structural, restoration or code-specific masonry work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the sand-to-binder ratio?

Sand mass divided by total binder mass.

Can mortar have multiple binder components?

Yes.

Does binder ratio determine strength?

No.

Should water be included in binder mass?

No. Water is a separate mixture component.

Can this design mortar?

No. It analyzes the proportions entered.
