Mortar Batch Scaling Calculator

Scale a known mortar formulation to a different production volume while preserving the original ingredient proportions. The calculator shows the scale factor and every adjusted ingredient quantity.

Enter the original mortar batch

This tool scales the formulation you enter. It does not validate the mix design, water demand, aggregate moisture or field workability.
Enter the original and target batch volumes.

The mortar scaling formula

Every ingredient is multiplied by the same scale factor.

Scale factor = target batch volume ÷ original batch volume
Scaled quantity = original quantity × scale factor

This preserves the ratios represented by the original formulation.

Worked example

If a 0.10 m³ reference batch contains 20 kg binder, 75 kg sand and 12 kg water, a 0.50 m³ target is five times larger.

0.50 ÷ 0.10 = 5.0×
Binder = 20 × 5 = 100 kg
Sand = 75 × 5 = 375 kg

Water should still be checked

Proportional scaling is arithmetic, not a guarantee that the final amount of mixing water should be used without adjustment. Aggregate moisture and absorption can alter the water actually added at the mixer.

Batch size versus yield

A nominal ingredient recipe does not necessarily mean its ingredient volumes add directly to the final hardened mortar volume. This tool assumes you already know the original batch basis and simply scales it.

Limitations

Do not use proportional scaling to substitute for mix design, product instructions, specification requirements or field trial procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I scale a mortar recipe?

Multiply every ingredient by target volume divided by original volume.

Does scaling change the ratio?

No.

Should water always scale exactly?

Not necessarily in actual production; check aggregate moisture and workability.

Can I scale down a batch?

Yes, provided the original volume is greater than zero.

Does this design mortar?

No.
